Lippan Art for the Living Room: Layout Ideas and Styling Tips

We’ve all been there - scrolling endlessly through beige-on-beige living rooms with wall art that looks like it was ordered during a yawn. But then comes Lippan. Glorious, glittery, unapologetically desi Lippan.
This isn’t your average cookie-cutter wall décor from “Made Somewhere-Else.” This is mud, mirror, and pure Gujarati magic doing the cha-cha with sunlight on your walls.
So why not give your living room a dose of mirror-ka-jadoo and warm, earthy flair that says,“Yes, I have good taste and soul”?
🌟 Wall-to-Wall Wow
Where you place your Lippan art is half the battle. The other half? Not hanging it above that dusty treadmill you promised to use.
Start with the hero wall - the one that greets you (and your guests) first. That’s your Instagram reel moment, and Lippan is your main character.
In my studio, I styled a six-panel Lippan set across a peachy clay-textured wall for a client in Pune. The morning light hit it just right, bouncing mirror flecks all over the room like disco ball confetti.
We added brass sconces on either side and a carved jhoola underneath. Her MIL said it reminded her of Kutch in the ’70s. Win.
Pro tip: Leave at least 8–10 inches of breathing room around the artwork. Lippan doesn’t like to be sandwiched between curtain rods and photo frames.

🎯 Big, Bold, or Boho?
Size does matter - especially with handmade mud and mirror.
Got a giant blank wall? Go grand. A 3x4 ft Lippan panel or a triptych layout (three-panel spread) works beautifully. Smaller room? Try two vertical panels flanking your TV, or a round motif (hello, sunburst!) above the couch.
One of our clients paired a Lippan lotus with floating shelves and tiny planters. The result? Think Sabyasachi meets Scandinavian minimalism.
And for the boho-licious tribe - scatter mirror-accent Lippan like a mini constellation above a linen sofa. Add cushions in indigo, rust, and turmeric, and you’ve basically unlocked Pinterest Nirvana.
🎨 Color Outside the Frame
Lippan isn’t just brown and silver, okay?
While the traditional white-mud-and-mirror palette is timeless, you don’t have to keep it earthy. We’ve played with blush pinks, midnight blues, even forest green with antique gold. (Fancy, no?)
For one Diwali redo, we made a deep maroon base with copper mirror fragments. It glowed.
Match or contrast your wall. If you’ve got muted paint, go bold with Lippan to make a statement. Already have loud walls? Try subtle tone-on-tone pieces that whisper luxury.
You can also paint borders around a central Lippan motif - like a faux frame that looks designer but is totally handmade.

✨ Mirror Mirror, But Make It Practical
Let’s be real - decor that doubles as conversation starters and reflectors? Yes, please.
Those tiny mirrors in Lippan don’t just look pretty. They bounce natural light, making even the gloomiest corners feel cozy and alive.
One of my favorite styling hacks? Place Lippan art near a window or behind a lamp. The mirrors catch stray light and scatter it around the room.
Warning: Don’t hang Lippan art in high-traffic toddler zones or wagging-tail alleyways. It’s sturdy, but not pet-proof. (Yes, Mow the cat, I am talking about you.)
📺 TV vs. Tradition?
You might be wondering - can my 65-inch TV and a traditional Lippan piece co-exist?
Totally. I call it the Heritage-Netflix Treaty.
Here’s how:
Mount your TV.
Add two vertical Lippan panels on either side.
Or place a long horizontal panel below, above the console.
Go for muted tones - think matte black mirrors on taupe mud base.
For one client who loved F.R.I.E.N.D.S reruns, we did a monochrome hexagon layout. Even his poker-night gang loved it.
